Freeport Water & Sewer Commission Flushing of Hydrants & Water Mains

The Freeport Water Department will be flushing fire hydrants and water lines from Oct 3 rd through Oct 7 th and again from October 11 through October 14, 2016. This might possibly carry through an additional week from October 17 to October 21 . Flushing will occur during the hours of 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. During flushing, customers may experience rusty or cloudy colored water. While the water remains safe to drink, customers should run their water for 5 to 10 minutes prior to doing laundry during this time to avoid staining of clothing. If water discoloration persist at your location for more than 24 hours after running water for 5 to 10 minutes, our department will re-flush the water mains that serve your area. If this occurs please call the Freeport Water & Sewer Construction Dispatch number @ 815-233-1686 leaving your full street address and flushing request. Flushing requests can be received by our staff at the above number during the hours of 7:00 am to 3:00 pm or left by phone message after normal working hours. We appreciate your patience and support with our essential flushing program.

The 2015-2016 City of Freeport Water and Sewer Commission, Phase B-Water Main Replacement and Upgrade Project is made possible by the financial assistance and cooperation of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and its State Revolving Fund (SRF) providing low interest infrastructure loans to protect or improve Illinois' quality of drinking water resources.

The purpose of this Water and Sewer Commission Project is to make water system improvements, including an estimated 21,080 feet of water main upgrades to 12 and 16 diameter in key areas that would provide adequate water transmission lines from the new Well No.9 to the new Elevated Tank and improvements to pressure zones, including the replacement of 10,310 feet of 6-8 inch water main and the replacement of 75 valves. The project will be funded through a State Revolving Fund loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency with the project cost estimated to be $8,587,963.77.

Mission Statement:
Freeport Water and Sewer will provide customers with high quality water and service in the most efficient and economical manner. We will work in cooperation with the customers to provide and maintain a safe, clean and secure water and sewer service now and for the future.

The first pipes of the Freeport Water Company were laid in July of 1882 after Nathan Shelton of Annapolis, Maryland, answered a plea in the newspapers for a water system. By 1889, 12 million gallons of water a month were being pumped through 12 miles of mains and an 88 foot water tower on Whistler St.

In 1937, the city bought the water system and established a commission headquartered in City Hall. This has led to the management of three elevated tanks, six wells, 28,000 customers, and 120 miles of mains. Currently, over 4 million gallons of water, is pumped through the mains daily.

The earliest sewer system of Freeport dumped untreated sewage into the Pecatonica River. In 1934, Freeport was warned by the state that a treatment plant must be built.

In 1968, over 5 million dollars was raised through grants and bond sales to fund the project. The project included five new lift stations, treatment plant expansion and a pilot research program.

In 1999, the wastewater plant is about to be expanded again with new treatment equipment, processes, and upgrades. This $12 million dollar project will help to keep the wastewater plant running smoothly for the next 20 years.

The Water and Sewer Commission has provided water since 1937 and sewer since 1939, and we will carry the city proudly and safely well into the next millennium.
