Street Sweeping Program

The City of Freeport has an ongoing street sweeping program.

The program is designed to prevent storm sewer backup by removing debris from along City streets and to present a neat appearance for residents and guests.

The City operates two street sweepers at this time. Each sweeper is assigned an area of responsibility on a daily basis. There is one assigned East of West Ave. and one assigned West of West Ave. Each sweeper tries to maintain a schedule that rotates on a weekly basis so that residents can anticipate their arrival.

All streets with curbs and gutters are swept on a weekly basis and all streets without curb and gutter are swept once in the fall and once in the spring. The reason for limited sweeping of these streets is due to the design of the street itself. Typically these streets do not have as much base below them to support the weight of the sweepers on a continual basis. Therefore the exact timing for sweeping depends on the moisture content of the soil beneath the street in the fall. In the spring, it is necessary to wait until the frost has left the ground.

Two evenings a week, Thursday and Sunday, the sweepers are assigned to the downtown area. They work in this area throughout the night since there is little traffic and parking in the downtown area then.
