Public Works Department

The Department of Public Works and the Street Department come together to direct the construction and maintenance of road, sidewalks, curbing and building. The Departments control the management of public construction, traffic and street lighting, snow and leaf removal, and animal control. The department staffs 22 persons.
Engineering Division Responsibilities

• Coordinate all roadway projects within the City of Freeport
• Work closely with the Illinois Department of Transportation.
• Work closely with Water & Sewer Commission
• Work closely with other City Departments

Administer grants related to Public Works

• Bike Path Grants
• Boat Launch Grants
• Department of Natural Resources Grants
• Illinois Department of Transportation Grants
• Brownsfield Grants

Currently involved in Projects with:

• Albertus Airport Corporate Hangar Project
• Brownfields Redevelopment Advisory Committee
• Yearly Street Maintenance Program
• Yearly LAPP Program

Street Division Responsibilities

• Street maintenance including snow plowing
• Tree removal and trimming - City owned trees only
• Cemetery management
• Provide mechanical support for Street Dept. and Police Dept.
